Wii-Hab: Revamping Your Rehab Program for a Marketing Win

Sometimes you need a new way to attract more therapy patients.  Sometimes, you just need something positive that you can put in the local newspaper.  Either way, it needs to be inexpensive.

One option that is very easy to implement is to incorporate the Nintendo Wii game console into your therapy services.

This motion-sensitive gaming system has proven to be quite useful in nursing home rehab departments.  Plus, it’s engaging and fun.  Rehab patients who might not want to go to therapy to exercise may think differently if they have a game to play.

And, the best part – it’s all billable time!  Yep, your nursing home can get paid for playing games in rehab.  The therapists use the Wii as another tool to work on balance, coordination, endurance, upper limb training, lower body training, reflex, dexterity, etc.  You can even track the patient’s progress with the save function on the game.  Already, Wii-Hab has been used as a tool in the treatment of Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, stroke recovery, spinal cord injury and brain injury rehab.

Wii-Hab can be utilized by all disciplines and there are tons of resources and success stories of its implementation in the nursing home environment.

Do I have to tell you that this has a cool factor?  A press release into the newspaper, a picture of your residents playing the Wii, and a quote from a resident stating that he never thought he’d be able to bowl/play baseball/etc. again until now – thanks to your nursing home!  That goes a long way.  Maybe be featured on tv.  All kinds of feel-good stories coming from this – great PR!
